Care Instructions & FAQ

I received my package! Now what?

Open your package immediately upon delivery. Inspect your tubers and reach out within 7 days if you have concerns with your order.

Tubers may stay in their packing material until it is time to plant, but we suggest putting baggies in a plastic bin with the lid slightly ajar. Keep in a cool, dry place and check on them frequently to be sure they like their environment.

When it is time to plant, be sure to check out our growing instructions.

Some of my tubers are small, what the heck!

Tuber size does not matter! A small tuber will produce just the same (if not better) than a tuber the size of a sweet potato. That being said, we guarantee that the tubers are larger than a AA battery and have a healthy body, neck, and crown/eye.

Why is the end of my tuber cut off?

All tubers get a snip at the end to clean up scraggly roots and check for tuber rot. If a tuber is particularly large, it will get a chop to encourage root and additional tuber growth- a tuber that is very large may not feel the need to seek out nutrients as it is self sufficient!

Can I pot up tubers early to get a head start?

Yes! You may pot up tubers early to get a head start on your season. Be sure to use slightly damp, high-quality potting mix and do not water again unless the soil is bone-dry. Once you see a sprout above the soil line, you may start watering more frequently. I find letting the soil almost completely dry out between watering reduces risk of rot. Be sure to have a fan running to help strengthen plants as they grow- if not, you risk having wimpy plants that can’t withstand transplant into the elements outside.

My Tuber rotted/disappeared in the ground/isn’t growing! Can I have a refund?

We guarantee that you receive a healthy tuber that will grow in the right conditions. Some varieties take a very long time to sprout, especially in poor soil or weather conditions. Resist the urge to dig up your tuber as you risk breaking off the likely sprout that is growing (been there done that!). If it has been more than 8-10 weeks without a sprout, the tuber may have rotted, been damaged, or simply failed to thrive. Pests, weather conditions, soil conditions, negligence, etc are risks in every garden. Due to the numerous ways tubers can be damaged or perform poorly outside of the seller’s control, we are not responsible and no refund will be issued.

my dahlia plant looks like it has a virus! Can I have a refund?

I carefully inspect and remove any suspicious plants throughout the season, sanitize tools between plants, and use organic methods to control pests. Yellowing leaves are not always a sign of virus- dahlia foliage ebbs and flows in how it appears. Unless you see a very obvious virus pattern in the foliage, try improving its environment first. Fish food/compost tea foliar sprays, fertilizing, increase/decrease watering, etc can all help improve the health of your dahlias. However, by purchasing, you acknowledge that dahlias—like all plants—can occasionally get sick, and viruses cannot be completely prevented. Because they can spread easily through insects and natural conditions, we do not offer refunds for virus.
